Lots of stories exist for how Rakhi, as a festival came into being but the one about the war between Gods and Demons is my utmost favourite. It stresses the point that this festival wasn’t just about a brother-sister relationship but simply about asking for protection for a loved one with a prayer and a thread. With having tied a Rakhi every year to my father, sent by his sisters, this story just makes the most sense :-).
Legend goes that Indra, God of sky and the rain was once humiliated by Bali, the demon king. Indra’s wife, Sachi is then believed to have been given a holy cotton thread by Vishnu to protect Indra. As luck would have it, Indra then came out victorious in the war. This I believe is what is the story behind the protective power of the holy thread, aka ‘Rakhi’. This ritual continued to be used by women in ancient India to protect the men in their lives, who were going out for war.
So, all you lovely readers, get ready for the upcoming Rakhi festival, make your own Rakhi or alternatively, order the most precious Rakhi you can find and send it to your loved one, sealed with a prayer and bundles of love. We reckon that the best Rakhis this season are from Lai by Puja and Pure Ghee by Aditi. Have a peep:
