Ramadan (in Arabic: رمضان, Ramadān) is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. This month is about fasting, being kind and giving to the less fortunate. Fasting from food is practiced from sunrise (Sahour) to sunset (Iftar) and the fast is broken with amazing food.
Traditionally the fast can be broken with having simply three dates and a glass of water but then we are not obviously going to stop at that! This post is dedicated completely to the different kinds of desserts that people enjoy after a whole, long day of abstinence. There is meat, there is biryani, there are samosas and above all there is ‘mithai’. So, without further ado, I present to you some finger-licking and easy-to-create traditional dessert recipes for Iftar.
Dates, are the unifying Iftar food across the world. It is believed that in the Hadith, which is a collection of sayings attributed to the Prophet Mohammed, it is recorded that he always broke the fast with dates and water. Hence, all people observing the ‘roza’ or fast during the Ramadan period also include dates and water in their Iftar along with other delicacies, of course!
Seviyan (toasted vermicelli) and Dates play an important role in the Iftar menu and I have included them in our selection of desserts too. So, Ready, steady, start drooling…

I really had to stop myself from adding more pictures. Just so much out there for that ‘sweet tooth’ person. However, we stop now, well for the purposes of this post, anyway! Maybe, some more soon…It’s Ramadan after all!
Apart from the above, there is of course the world of Jalebis, Gulab Jamuns, barfis and the humble laddos or are there some more traditional favourites included in the Iftar? Go, on and educate us…
Do you happen to be attending an Iftar party this week or hosting one? Remember to either take one of these delights or make one for your guests…whatever makes you happier but do make sure these beauties are included in the menu.
Happy Ramadan, people!
