Livecrafts: Empowering Creative Hands

We are passionate about handmade crafts of India. Delving deeper into the stories they spin, makes some of them even more endearing. I believe that stories have the power to steer attention and engage the readers; so even though we have written about ‘The colours of Channapatna‘ earlier, we came across Livecrafts, with their tagline – Creative Hands Empowered – and we couldn’t help but bring them to you.

Started by three like-minded people, one of them being a handicraft artisan from Channapatna, Livecrafts is an initiative to revive and popularize the forgotten Indian handicraft. They focus on new contemporary designs and manufacture them using traditional process.

The colours used are organic natural dyes, such as kumkum for Red, Turmeric for Yellow. They are mixed with lac, heated and processed into long sticks. Experienced craftsmen make these magical sticks with ease, that are used to color the products. Processing of the softwood (ale-mara) is followed by ‘turning’ as per the design. Finally,  lacquered colour is applied to create wonderful products.

Livecrafts trains women artisans and empower them with a skill of manufacturing these craft-based products. Their focus on this specific segment is mainly driven by the motive to provide sustainable revenue to the village family through women. So far, they have trained seven artisans this year, and continue in their efforts. This initiative has attracted research students from some prestigious design institutes like NID and ICAT Chennai.
