We grew up listening to ‘health is wealth’, ‘early to bed, early to rise, makes a man, healthy, wealthy and wise’ but then somewhere in the process of growing up, living a life surrounded by information explosion, streamed entertainment, gadgets and chaos, we began measuring our success with the level of stress we could endure and suddenly found ourselves being in a state that most certainly couldn’t be described as ‘happy’ or ‘at peace’. However, as they say in Hindi ‘जब जागो तभी सवेरा’ , roughly translating to mean that it’s never too late to start afresh and this is exactly what is happening with most of us today.
Well-Being is rightfully getting the coverage it deserves; finally looking after oneself is being given the ‘VIP seat’ it deserves and we are bringing to you 7-businesses over the next 7-day period that celebrate this. Vatsala is a seeker, what is being sought has changed over time. An alumna of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Vatsala joined the corporate sector and worked across industries, from advertising and marketing to market research, working and living in India, Singapore, the Philippines and China. After juggling work and family for several years, she became aware of the importance of physical, mental and spiritual health and has now devoted herself to their pursuit.
Most of all Yoga is about healing yourself. And to begin that process, you need to begin with accepting how you are, today. As the internet meme goes, You can’t heal what you don’t love. You begin with accepting your body the way it is today, take responsibility for your own health. Vatsala reminds us again that each one of us is unique and so should our yoga practice be. It is not a competitive sport, where you instagram your best pose. The idea is to get better than how you were, each day, one step at a time. It is you vs yourself. There isn’t a perfect body shape that will do yoga right. As Vatsala says ‘anyone can yoga.’

Lizzie Cutmore: Kundalini Yoga teacher, Certified in Ayurvedic Foot Massage & Gong Relaxation
Lizzie has been teaching Kundalini yoga in Cambridge since 2008, having trained with the Amrit Nam Sarovar Yoga school and then with Camyoga. Lizzie is also certified in Ayurvedic Kansa Vakti foot massage and Gong relaxation.
Often yoga is presented as a set of exercises that will build your strength, make you more flexible and can add to your overall health and wellbeing; Kundalini yoga is that and more. It is also a relationship between you and your Self, it is a technology of awareness. The word “yoga” (“jugit” in sanskrit) means to join and by practising Kundalini yoga you are working to join the mind, body and spirit; to join the finite with the infinite. Kundalini yoga can be enjoyed by everyone, no matter of age or physical ability.
A kundalini class always begins by “tuning in” with a short mantra then we start some warm up exercises and follow this with a Kriya, which is a yoga set of exercises for a specific purpose. This includes stretching postures, movement exercises, breathing exercises and chanting mantras. Mantras may seem strange at first but they are Yoga for the mind, they set up sound vibrations in the body and change mental states. Finally we finish with relaxation and/or meditation. As Yogi Bhajan said, “Life is a flow of love, only your participation is requested”, join in when you are ready.
Sathyajith Devdas: Coffee farmer from Coorg
Sathya comes from a family that has been growing coffee in the hills of Coorg for many, many years selling to middlemen but now, Sathyajith is working towards connecting to customers directly and will be talking to us about the speciality of his most delicious, aromatic shade-grown coffee. This coffee is grown at 4450 ft elevation, always handpicked and is still one of the best Arabica beans.
Many decades were spent bashing this drink but the last few years has seen some research being published about coffee not being bad enough to be put in the ‘naughty corner’. It’s still not a health drink but just like everything else, when taken in moderation, it works just fine and when the coffee beans are looked after with love and care, then even better.

As a certificated clinical hypnotherapist, Devdyuti’s mission is to help clients overcome obstacles using the vehicle of hypnosis. Another area where hypnosis is seeing great success is weight management using the gastric band technique pioneered by Sheila Granger, under whom Devdyuti has trained. This program uses a combination of approaches and besides four off hypnosis sessions, the client is given a recording to listen to over a period of twenty eight days. This is followed (post completion) by three monthly support sessions and a recording tailored to the client’s goals. Hypnosis helps to induce and reinforce changes in food habits and to address the issues which encouraged weight gain in the past such as comfort eating, binge eating, sleep habits and more. This is a holistic program addressing physical as well as mental well-being of the client.
